Hannibal is an upcoming thriller television series on NBC, detailing the beginning of the relationship between Special Agent Will Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The series was developed by Bryan Fuller, and is based on Thomas Harris' Hannibal novels.

CreationEdit

Development on Hannibal began in November 2011, when L.A.-based Gaumont International Television (GIT) sold the series to NBC. GIT's CEO, Katie O’Connell, previously served as NBC's head of drama, as well as the producer for the cinematic Hannibal adaptations, including Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. O’Connell brought Bryan Fuller aboard the production, having previously worked with him on Heroes. [1]
The series was not given a pilot order by NBC, but rather given a straight-to-series order for a 13-episodes first season. This unusual decision was based on the strength of Fuller's pilot script. [2]

CastingEdit

Lead CharactersEdit

It was reported in late March 2012 that British actor Hugh Dancy was cast as Special Agent Will Graham. [3] The second leading character was finally cast in early June, when it was reported that Mads Mikkelsen was cast as the titular character, Hannibal Lecter. [4] By early August, two other pivotal roles were cast: Laurence Fishburne was announced as the portrayer of FBI Agent Jack Crawford, [5] and Caroline Dhavernas, who collaborated with Fuller on Wonderfalls, was tapped to play psychology professor Alana Bloom. [6] Lastly, Hettienne Park was cast as Beverly Katz, a member of Crawford's Behavioral Science Unit and a possible love interest for Will Graham. [7]

Recurring CharactersEdit

Early September saw the casting of Kids in the Hall alum Scott Thompson as fellow BAU member, Jimmy Price, as well as Aaron Abrams as Brian Zeller. [8] Former Camelot actress Lara Jean Chorostecki was cast as tabloid blogger Freddie Lounds, a character whose male incarnation was portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman. [9] Former Pushing Daisies actress Ellen Greene was cast in early October as Mrs. Komeda, a friend of Hannibal Lecter's,[10] and Gina Torres as Crawford's wife, Bella Crawford. [11] The iconic role of Hannibal's nemesis, Dr. Frederick Chilton, previously portrayed on the big screen by Anthony Heald, was filled by Raul Esparza in mid-November, [12] followed by the casting of former X-Files star Gillian Anderson as Hannibal's personal therapist, Bedelia Du Maurier. [13] British actor Eddie Izzard was cast as Abel Gideon, an inmate at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, claiming to be the "Chesapeake Ripper." [14]
